Quick Facts About Brown-banded Cockroaches

Brown-banded cockroaches are one of the smallest species of invasive cockroaches.

Male brown-banded cockroaches have wings and can fly, while females have short wings and can’t fly.

Brown-banded cockroaches typically need less moisture than other species, so they can be found throughout the home.

The Brown-banded cockroach is sometimes confused with the German cockroach due to their similar appearance. Brown-banded cockroaches are smaller, lighter in colour and have characteristic yellow bands running along their thorax.

What Attracts Brown-banded Cockroaches?

Brown-banded cockroaches prefer areas with less moisture but more heat. They can be found in living rooms, bedrooms, basements, attics and crawl spaces.

While brown-banded cockroaches will eat almost anything to survive, they do have a preference for starchy foods. They will often feed on wallpaper, glue, or books.

Unlike most cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches don’t stay very close to food or moisture sources. They prefer to hide around heat sources, including electronics and appliance motors. They can also seek shelter behind decorations, in furniture and behind loose wallpaper.

Should I be Worried About Brown-banded Cockroaches?

Brown-banded cockroaches can carry harmful microorganisms on their legs and spread them to surfaces as they crawl around.

They have been known to carry intestinal diseases such as dysentery, typhoid fever and cholera.

Similar to other types of cockroach infestations, the presence of brown-banded cockroaches can cause respiratory issues and exacerbate conditions like asthma and dermatitis.

Brown-banded cockroaches are difficult to spot. Due to their smaller size and avoidance of light, they can often hide in particularly hard-to-reach areas.
