    Quick Facts About Pharaoh Ants

Unlike most other ants commonly found in Canada, Pharaoh ants feed on flesh and bodily fluids.

Pharaoh ant colonies can have over 300,000 workers and several queens.

Pharaoh ants tend to build nests close to sources of heat and moisture.

Pharaoh ants are difficult to remove due to their ability to break off from colonies and form new ones – also referred to as “budding.”

    What Attracts Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh ants are particularly attracted to warm, humid areas and will frequently be found indoors around pipes, drains and wiring. They seek food and shelter during the colder months by invading all types of buildings.

Pharaoh ants will nest in almost any area where they have a source of food and moisture, including in clothes, linens, and even in wounds under soiled bandages.

Pharaoh ants will quickly congregate around a food source, such as unwashed dishes or sugary liquid spills.

Should I be Worried About Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh ants can be a serious nuisance to homeowners. Due to their attraction to flesh and bodily fluids, they can spread disease and contaminate food. They have been known to spread everything from salmonella to botulism.

Pharaoh ants are particularly threatening to hospitals and commercial food establishments, and can be difficult to get rid of entirely because of their tendency to scatter and form new nests.
